The Virgin Money Foundation is recruiting new Trustees!
The Virgin Money Foundation is looking to recruit one or more additional Trustees to help govern its activity and develop its strategy. The Foundation believes that big changes happen locally and spends time looking for the incredible people in communities in the North East of England and beyond who have the imagination, commitment and skill to change their neighbourhoods for the better. We invest in their work and support them – both with funding and with any other resources that we can help to facilitate - including the expertise of Virgin Money colleagues – to make their impact as great as possible.
Our Trustees are a group of brilliant volunteers who give up their valuable time to support the Virgin Money Foundation, setting our strategy and deciding how we use the resources we have to make the biggest difference possible. The Trustees have a collective responsibility to ensure the proper administration of the charity. They safeguard our funds and make sure that all our assets and resources are used efficiently and effectively.
Our Trustees meet once a quarter for an afternoon and evening, have an additional strategy day once per year and commit to attend one additional sub-committee. Travel and accommodation costs are covered by the Foundation.
What are we looking for?
We have Trustees with a broad mix of skills and experience. We would like to build this by strengthening our Board in one or more of the following areas:
- Connectivity into Government & policymakers
We are keen to share the learning from our investments with policy makers and government, develop co-funding arrangements with them and help move the dial on policy areas that effect the communities we fund into. A candidate with good links into Government and policy makers will increase our effectiveness in this area.
- Is an Entrepreneur
The entrepreneurial roots of the Virgin brand speak for themselves. We want to be imaginative and responsive, giving the best support we can to help social entrepreneurs create positive and lasting change. A candidate who is an entrepreneur will help us understand how to do this well.
- Connectivity with other grantmakers
Wherever we can we work with other grantmakers to make our funding go further. A candidate with strong links to other funders would be welcomed.
- Expertise in social investment
As we grow we will seek to provide a tool box of support for charities and social enterprises, offering grants, repayable grants and social investment. A candidate who can develop our thinking and strategy further in this area would be welcomed.
- Expertise in addressing financial exclusion
We have begun investing in responses to financial exclusion but recognise that this is a huge area, requiring careful thought and partnership working. A candidate with either technical expertise in financial exclusion or lived experience of the issue, who can assist us in developing our strategy in this area, would be welcomed.
- Experience of the communities we fund into
Virgin Money Foundations spends all of its money in neighbourhoods in the top 20% of indices of deprivation nationally, working to regenerate these areas. First-hand experience of living in communities that have experienced social and economic decline would be particularly welcomed.
This opportunity is open to all, and we will invite those likely to make the strongest contribution over time to become a Trustee. However, we know that people sometimes feel that their backgrounds preclude them from being a prospective trustee, we are particularly welcoming applications from those individuals with lived experience of the social issues we seek to support.
