Action Foundation is an award-winning charity based in Newcastle and Sunderland supporting refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. The charity was set up in 2006 following research which identified large gaps in provision for this community. Action Foundation runs three supported housing projects and an English language school helping its clients avoid homelessness, integrate into the local community, develop skills, increase their independence and overcome isolation.
Action Foundation currently manages 12 properties in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland for philanthropic private landlords. They provide supported accommodation to newly granted refugees at risk of homelessness. The 12 properties accommodate 49 refugees, and there are always refugees on the waiting list.
Support workers help residents as they transition from the asylum process to living independently. Refugees are particularly vulnerable to homelessness immediately after being granted asylum as they have 28 days to vacate the accommodation provided by The Home Office. Lack of time, support, available housing and limited English makes the process of securing accommodation challenging and leaves many at serious risk of exploitation.
Action Foundation will use their £48,931 grant from the North East Fund to employ a Project Manager to manage the property portfolio.
